The Danube Water Program was jointly launched by the World Bank and the Danube Water Utilities Association (IAWD). The program is headquartered in Vienna, at the World Bank office, and is comprised of representatives from both institutions. The program implements its activities in close cooperation with IAWD and World Bank staff in the region.
The Program’s Steering Committee consists of donor and agency representatives, and its activities are supported and guided by an Advisory Board, with the participation of delegates from key stakeholders in the water sector in the region. The program promotes regional experiences and expertise, but at the same time seeks to introduce best internationally relevant practices.
The World Bank and IAWD designed the program with the aim of implementing smart policies, introducing modern tools, and achieving sustainable services in the water sector in the region.
To achieve this goal, the program supports activities in five areas of intervention: sector governance and structure (Pillar I); regulation, tariffs, and subsidies (Pillar II); benchmarking (Pillar III); asset management and investment planning (Pillar IV); and improving service efficiency (Pillar V). All pillars are interconnected and there is a range of activities implemented across the various pillars and involving key stakeholders who should collaborate on their implementation.
The language of choice for the programme for regional activities is English, but activities at sub-regional, national and local levels may also be implemented in other languages.
